My Body No Choice - Open Theatre Project

Open Theatre Project is proud to present a reading of

My Body No Choice

originally commissioned by Arena Stage, Washington DC

In June 2022, reproductive rights took a giant leap backwards when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In the United States, we can drive when we turn 16, and vote when we turn 18. But we no longer have the bodily autonomy to make the choices that will impact us the most.

My Body No Choice features monologues by Anonymous, Lee Cataluna, Fatima Dyfan, Lisa Loomer, Dael Orlandersmith, Sarah Ruhl, Mary Hall Surface, and V (formerly known as Eve Ensler). Through these monologues, the playwrights share what choice means to them, through the telling of fiction and non-fiction stories rooted in personal experience; theirs or a friend’s.

Open Theatre Project's performance will be co-directed by Christina R Chan and Alexandra Smith.

Featuring (in order of appearance):

Lindsay Eagle, Valerie Stephens, Karla Lang, Jenine Florence Jacinto, Dayenne Walters, Anneke Reich, Karin Trachtenberg, & Beyoncé Martinez

In addition to a reading of the play, Open Theatre Project’s performance will include audience engagement interludes during which attendees can release tension, share their stories, and honor their own and others’ experiences.

Following the performance will be a panel discussion focused on the steps being taken to ensure that the right to abortion continues to be protected in the state of Massachusetts, the barriers to care that many pregnant people in this state still face, and a call-to-action for the midterm elections and beyond.
