>>> ABOUT THE CONCERT
Works from the Ottoman court tradition, dance forms and songs in the makam (modal) tradition, set to varying cycles of percussion. Sets typically begin and end with taksim (improvisation) either with a soloist or the entire group. At other times, improvisation occurs spontaneously over an ostinato, within or between pieces.

Orkestra Marhaba is a performance and study group whose purpose is to explore and interpret Middle Eastern makam (modal) traditions over several centuries and geographies, specializing in the spontaneous improvisational genre known by the term taksim. The improvisational and composed music is set to a variety of odd and even rhythms. Performers: Frederick Stubbs Diana Traylor Volkan Efe Shanteri Baliga and special guests.
